Brock Lesnar says he'd 'probably still be banging heads' in UFC if not for diverticulitis

Image
Despite only competing in mixed martial arts for a few short years, Brock Lesnar made quite the impact. Lesnar became UFC heavyweight champ in his fourth professional fight when he knocked out Randy Couture at UFC 91 in 2008. By 2011, he was retired. With just eight fights in his entire pro career, Lesnar rose to the top of the sport and became a must-see pay-per-view attraction every time he stepped inside the Octagon. His emergence was quick, forceful, and everlasting. And his departure was just as swift. Yes, there were the back-to-back soul-crushing defeats at the hands of Cain Velasquez and Alistair Overeem. Those two losses were enough to have any fighter thinking about retirement. But what really pushed “The Beast” into an early retirement was his well-chronicled fight with the digestive disease diverticulitis. The painful disease caused Lesnar to have close to a foot of his colon removed in the summer of 2011. Lesnar was never the same fighter after the procedure. A few sh...

Reeling Jaguars stressing accountability for full effort on every play

Image
On any 1-5 team, it's an extremely good bet that there are players who aren't doing their job well enough. For the Jacksonville Jaguars, it's figuring out how to get everyone in line, and what to do with those who don't. After a disheartening loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday, in which Jacksonville blew a fourth-quarter lead at home to a team that came in with a 1-4 record, "accountability" was the buzzword. They want to figure out a way to get everyone to compete every down nobody letting down for a play or two. "That comes back and hits you,’’ Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said, according to the Jacksonville Times-Union . “You can’t do that, you can’t do that in the NFL. In the secondary, if a guy gets behind you, there is no excuse. If you lose your eyes, there’s no excuse.’’ But is it a loss of focus or a lack of effort? The former is symptomatic of a young player, sometimes. The latter is more concerning. D efensive lineman   Sen’Derrick Marks...

R.A. Dickey pulled in second inning of Game 4 after giving up two home runs

Image
TORONTO – So far through two ALCS games in Toronto, both teams have had to deal with short outings from a starting pitcher. In the Blue Jays' 11-8 win in Game 3, Royals starter Johnny Cueto couldn't get out of the third inning. It was R.A. Dickey's turn to struggle in Game 4 on Tuesday. Dickey was pulled after allowing five runs, four of them earned, over 1 2/3 innings. He served up a two-run home run to Ben Zobrist in the first and a solo shot to Alex Rios in the second. The Blue Jays entered Game 4 trailing in the series 2-1. R.A. Dickey is done after 1.2 innings. The last time he made a start that short was June 13, 2008. He nearly out-Cueto'd Cueto. — Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) October 20, 2015 [Related:  Blue Jays stop selling beer cans in upper deck after unruly ALDS incident ] When Dickey first began to experiment with the knuckleball as his primary pitch, he did not experience instant success. Laker boss Jim Buss is happy his team has 'turned the corner'

Image
If Lakers basketball prez Jim Buss wanted to make Los Angeles fans feel any better about his team’s prospects by sitting for a rare on-record interview, he probably failed in that regard. [ Follow Dunks Don't Lie on Tumblr: The best slams from all of basketball ] The Lakers stink. They stunk two seasons ago, last season, and they’ll stink again this season. That’s OK! A lot of teams stink, and usually that sort of ineptitude leads to scads of high draft picks and a chance to clear house with salary cap space. The Lakers, though, are still a few years behind in that regard due to the triptych of calamities that were the Dwight Howard Era, the Steve Nash Trade, and the Kobe Bryant Contract Extension. [ Yahoo Fantasy Basketball: Sign up for a league today ] This is part of the reason why Buss spoke with USA Today’s Sam Amick about his team’s fortunes heading forward, and his own role in those Laker champions of lore : “(If) I would have taken credit for all the moves we won cha...

Toronto Furies GM relishes underdog status in CWHL

BY CHRIS LOMON Whether she’s speaking of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) or the Toronto Furies, where she’s the general manager, Rebecca Michael knows the key to success is always staying one stride ahead of the competition.  It was a banner start to the 2015-16 regular season on Oct. 17 for the Furies, one of five teams that comprise the CWHL, with a 2-0 home win over reigning champion Boston at the MasterCard Centre. The following day, the two teams faced-off again, this time with Boston netting the two points courtesy of a 2-1 shootout victory. The good for the Furies: grabbing three out of four points. The bad: injuries to key players. “I think that we have a great core of returning veterans and strong group of drafted players,” offered Michael. “That being said, with the season only one weekend in, injuries are proving to be a critical barrier we have faced with three of our top forwards on the sidelines for both short and long periods of time. As a team, ...

BDL's 2015-16 NBA Season Previews: Brooklyn Nets

Image
Say this much for the Brooklyn Nets: At least they tried. [ Yahoo Fantasy Basketball: Sign up for a league today ] Owner Mikhail Prokhorov empowered general manager Billy King to make bold moves in aggressive pursuit of a championship: trade for Deron Williams, trade for Joe Johnson, hire Jason Kidd, trade for Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, sign Andrei Kirilenko, add draft picks to deals like Splenda to your coffee. No expense was spared; nobody went unpaid. Now it's time to pay the piper, and somehow, he makes even more than Joe Johnson. (In case you forgot: $24.9 million. Joe Johnson's the NBA's  second-highest paid player . It's 2015.) Alas, the Nets never even sniffed the O'Brien, topping out with a second-round knockout two seasons ago before Kidd absconded to Wisconsin , Pierce decamped for D.C.  and Lionel Hollins took the reins of a team seemingly stuck between paring down payroll and pushing for the playoffs . Brooklyn did return to the postseas...

Matt Harvey has insurance policy protecting future earnings from arm injury

New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey has an insurance policy put in place by his agent Scott Boras protecting him if he suffers an injury that leads to loss of potential earnings.  Such policies are common in the sports world for elite college and professional athletes, but Harvey's is newsworthy because the entire final six weeks of the regular season around the Mets were spent debating whether the team should stop using Harvey because he is in his first season following Tommy John surgery and he was approaching, and ultimately surpassed, a 180-innings limit his agent and the team had discussed before the season. CBSSports reported Boras secured the policy for Harvey at the end of the regular season. [ Check out Big League Stew on Tumblr for more cool stuff from the MLB postseason ] Harvey won't be a free agent until 2018, but he is eligible for arbitration this winter and figures to get a nice bump in pay from the $614,125 he is making this season. Harvey was absolutely dom...

Greg Cosell's Week 6 Review: The ingredients for a Panthers comeback

Image
There were a lot of factors that went into the Carolina Panthers' big win at the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. Carolina's defense had its leader, middle linebacker Luke Kuechly, back and played very fast as a result. The offense had a sustaining run game. Quarterback Cam Newton got hot after a shaky start. And Seattle's defense continued to fall apart as it keeps experimenting with different schemes. Let's start with the game-winning play, because for as well as the Panthers played, it was a total breakdown by the Seahawks that led to the final touchdown. After the Panthers spiked the ball to stop the clock, the Seahawks totally blew the coverage with a lack of communication. Tight end Greg Olsen was the "X iso" to the boundary. He ran a vertical seam route. Cornerback Richard Sherman looked like he was playing "Cover 2" zone and safety Earl Thomas looked like he was playing "quarters" zone. The bottom line is Thomas did not get the call,...

Bucks' John Henson says he was racially profiled at Wisconsin jewelry store

Image
Milwaukee Bucks big man John Henson took to Instagram on Monday afternoon to claim that he'd been racially profiled during a trip to a jewelry store in Whitefish Bay, Wis. Urge you to read my Instagram post about Schwanke- Kasten jewelers . — John Henson (@Johnhenson31) October 19, 2015 Henson, who is black and who recently signed a four-year, $44 million contract extension to stay with the Bucks, shared a photo showing the front of Schwanke-Kasten Jewelers. The caption read as follows: Went to @schwankekasten jewelry today in White-Fish Bay during regular business hours. They locked the door and told me to go away. After I rang the doorbell twice everyone went to the back. No [one] answered the door or told me what was going on. This was followed by two police cars pulling up and parking across the street and watching me for 5 minutes (I assumed they were called by the store). I was then approached by 2 officers and questioned about the [car] dealer vehicle I was in which ...

Clemson stages pep rally at terminally ill 9-month-old's home (Video)

The family of a terminally ill baby couldn't make it to a Clemson pep rally. So the school brought the pep rally to them. Jonathan and Stephanie Bolt's 9-month-old daughter Addison has Krabbe disease. Jonathan wanted to take his daughter to a Clemson football game, but she's unable to sit up, eat, or breathe on her own and can't go. After finding that out, Clemson made sure they got to enjoy a personalized experience. Krabbe disease affects 1-in-100,000 people in the United States and there is no known cure. From the Mayo Clinic: Krabbe disease is an inherited disorder that destroys the protective coating (myelin) of nerve cells in the brain and throughout the nervous system. Ohio State students hit JT Barrett with jump pass on campus (Video)

Image
Ohio State scored on a successful jump pass from J.T. Barrett to Braxton Miller during Saturday night’s win over Penn State. On Monday, Barrett got a taste of his own medicine… sort of. Two Ohio State students spotted Barrett on campus and decided to put him in the shoes of a Penn State defender. Better yet, they caught the funny moment on camera. Hitting @JT_theQB4th with that jump pass @BraxtonMiller5 http://pic.twitter.com/7ha0UIfDuC — MIURA (@Andrew_Miura) October 19, 2015 Barrett must have thought it was pretty funny and tweeted about it on Monday morning. 2 dudes hit me with the jump pass walking to class @BraxtonMiller5 #GoBucks — Jt Barrett (@JT_theQB4th) October 19, 2015 Miller liked it, too. Haaa. #sauce https://t.co/STzIfWt9cN — BRAXTON MILLER (@BraxtonMiller5) October 19, 2015 The execution wasn’t quite on par with Barrett, who perfectly pulled it off a la Tim Tebow at Florida. Did Johnny Cueto see someone stealing signs in center field during Game 3?

Image
TORONTO – The following is a fact: Johnny Cueto pitched one of the worst games in postseason history in Game 3 of the ALCS on Monday night in Toronto. Cueto recorded just six outs before getting pulled in the third inning and was charged with eight earned runs as the Blue Jays won the game 11-8 . There were multiple factors that led to his rough outing. He was facing the league's best lineup. He couldn't command his fastball and was leaving balls up in the zone. Outside of his terrific start in Game 5 of the ALDS against Houston, he hasn't been very good since coming over from Cincinnati to Kansas City in a blockbuster trade in late July. These are all facts. But was there something else at play? The following is purely speculative, but boy will it get people talking. [Related:  Blue Jays bats erupt in Game 3 as Royals ace Johnny Cueto flops ] According to fellow Royals starter Edinson Volquez, Cueto made reference to seeing someone in the seats in center field pote...

Martavis Bryant, Chris Ivory spurred Week 6 winner in $700K Baller contest

Image
Week 6’s winner of the “NFL $700K Baller” contest put up 193.62 points, as scoring was down a bit. The winning entry was comprised of six players owned by fewer than 8.0% of teams, so it took some bargain shopping and deep sleepers to take home this week’s $70,000 prize .  Brian Hoyer helped lead the way at quarterback, as he threw for 293 yards with three scores while costing just $25. He has a 7:1 TD:INT ratio while taking just two sacks over the past three games, compiling a QB Rating over 100.0 in each of those contests. This week’s winner utilized a Houston connection, as they also had DeAndre Hopkins , who put up 148 receiving yards and two scores. Over the last four games, he has 38 catches for 575 yards and three touchdowns. There’s a strong argument Hopkins is the No. 1 fantasy wide receiver, but he wasn’t priced as such. The winner’s biggest home run came at a different wide receiver, as Martavis Bryant produced 29.50 points yet cost just $20 and was owned by only 1...

Curtis Glencross says he's retiring after 507 NHL games

Curtis Glencross has told TSN’s Darren Dreger that he’s retiring after 507 games over nine NHL seasons. Glencross had two opportunities to catch on with NHL teams this preseason, but both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Colorado Avalanche decided to release him from tryout contracts and not sign him to a deal. "It's heartbreaking, but there's a plan for us,” he told Dreger earlier this month . “That's the only way to look at it.  I played 10 plus years of pro hockey...it has been a good run. We will wait to see if anything pops up in the next few weeks and we'll make our decision from there." The 32-year old Glencross has three young children, so going to play in Europe or the KHL was out of the question.  "We have weighed our options and with the young family I'm enjoying a lot of firsts with them,” he said. Glencross went undrafted and played two seasons at the University of Alaska-Anchorage. In 2004, he inked a deal with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks ...

Ohio State names J.T. Barrett starting quarterback

J.T. Barrett has final earned his starting spot back. After weeks of playing backup quarterback to Cardale Jones, coach Urban Meyer announced Tuesday that Barrett would start Saturday’s game against Rutgers. This isn’t much of a surprise. Barrett came in during the first half of Saturday’s win against Penn State and led the Buckeyes to their first touchdown. He took over in the third quarter and played the rest of the game, making what was a dual-quarterback system a one-man job. In the past when Barrett had come in as a spark for Jones, he’d performed OK, but nothing that would have warranted a quarterback switch. Last Saturday was different. Barrett used his legs to take advantage of a Penn State defense that was trying to limit throwing lanes. It was like watching the Ohio State team that Barrett made successful a year ago. And quite frankly, it really looked like the first time this year Barrett, who suffered an ankle injury late last season that caused him to miss the postsea...
