Clouds increase overnight; showers Friday morning

The clouds will increase overnight as the next storm front approaches from the west. This front will bring showers to the area after midnight tonight. However, thanks to those clouds temperatures will hold in the 50s. Friday will feature a few showers and possibly a brief period of rain during the morning hours, but by the afternoon the rain will be tapering down and the clouds should break for a little sun. Rainfall amounts should average between a tenth and quarter of an inch through Friday afternoon. Friday's highs will also reach the upper 60s. Saturday looks good with a mix of sun and clouds and afternoon highs soaring into the middle 70s. Sunday won't be a bad day either, but it will be cooler with highs in the lower and middle 60s and cloudier (especially later on in the day). from 69News:Home http://ift.tt/1aChAmE

Muhlenberg College "sends silence packing"

A nonprofit group is carrying a message it hopes will make a difference on college campuses nationwide. Active Minds promotes mental health awareness and takes its "Send Silence Packing" exhibit to more than a dozen schools each year. On Thursday, it brought 1,100 backpacks to Muhlenberg College in Allentown. The 1,100 backpacks represent the 1,100 college students who die of suicide annually. "I think it probably starts with wonder," said Lee Duffy-Ledbetter, with Active Minds. "When it starts to sink it what all the backpacks mean, that's when the progression of different emotions start to happen." Duffy-Ledbetter lost his brother Chris to suicide, less than two weeks after he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. "That pushed me to doing something I was firmly rooted in," Duffy-Ledbetter said. Now, he travels to campuses to share his brother's story and the stories of the thousands of others. Some of the backpacks have pictures of peopl...

Something for everyone at the 25th annual Berks Jazz

There was something for everyone at the 25th annual Berks Jazz Fest, Monday night. It was a dream come true for members of the Berks High School All-Star Jazz Band. They filled the Crowne Plaza ballroom in Wyomissing with their smooth sounds. They have been working hard for this moment ever since they were selected through competitive auditions back in February. "Lots of hard work, lots of practice," said Doug Matz who organizes the band. "I would say we did a lot. Especially the one-day rehearsal. That was pretty long," said Eric Wofle, a Senior at Oley Valley High School. Some of the students say, thanks to the opportunity to play before a large audience, they are more motivated than ever to improve their craft. "It was really heated, awesome," said Adam Helmer, a senior at Boyertown High School. "I could just feel everyone connecting out there. It was great." But the fun wasn't limited to young musicians. Bacon to be replaced with broccoli?

To IronPigs baseball fans, bacon is almost as big of an attraction as the sport itself. "The bacon belongs here," Rich Prosser of Bethlehem said. It comes on a stick, on a hotdog, doused in sugar and sprinkled inside of just about any sandwich you can imagine. "I love bacon who doesn't like bacon?" Joseph Iannetta of Allentown said. But a billboard off of Tilghman Street, near Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, suggests a serving of bacon a day increases the risk of cancer by over 20 percent. A nonprofit group of physicians called the Physicians Committee is behind the message, encouraging the IronPigs team to ditch bacon for healthier snacks like broccoli. "Broccoli are you serious?" Pat Kitchenman of North Wales said. And the IronPigs President and General Manager Kurt Landes seems to agree. "It is all about bacon this year," Landes said. While Landes does say the park features salads, grilled chicken, fruit cups and gluten free options, he also ...
