Steam kills paid mods for Skyrim after user backlash

Steam
Last week, Steam launched the ability for developers to build mods that could be sold on the Workshop. The first game to get the new feature was Skyrim, with more to come in the future. Unfortunately for the company, that didn’t go down well. Users responded with a very vocal backlash about the functionality, even going as far as making the top mod on the store a protest about paid mods. In response, Steam has stepped back on the feature and has removed it from the Skyrim workshop. Those that actually purchased a mod will receive a full refund. A…

Latest Vivaldi browser preview brings useful tab stacking feature, mouse gestures and more

Earlier this year, former Opera CEO Jon von Tetzchner, launched Vivaldi as a new browser for power users. Today, the company has released the latest preview of the browser which adds some interesting new features. The most interesting new feature is the ability to tile browser tabs in a single window. This is particularly useful if you’re using a large screen and don’t want to have multiple windows floating around for individual tabs. It’s a pretty nifty way to view tabs and is something I’ve not seen in other browsers previously. It’s quite useful for comparing two products or following along with an event.…

Sendish is a cut-throat new photo-sharing app that doesn’t want to see your brunch pics

IMG_8017
Sendish is a new photo-sharing app that is described by its founders as being ‘honestly anonymous.’ Released this week on iOS only, the idea behind it is to promote sharing without apprehension. You take a photo of where you are in the world without any filters or edits and it gets sent around the globe from person to person without any more detail than the location of where it was taken and the time. Sounds good, right? Well, this is where things get a little muddled. The aim of the app is to promote sharing worldwide without having to be…

The Apple Watch is the simplest way to buy from Amazon yet

Amazon
While many early third-party Apple Watch apps aren’t that impressive, a few stand out – Amazon’s, for one. It’s perhaps the most streamlined and straightforward way to buy something from the retailer yet. Here’s how it works… The only thing you can do from the app’s homescreen is tap the search button. This brings up the Watch’s standard voice interface screen, allowing you to say what you want to buy. This isn’t something you’ll always be happy to do in public, of course, but voice is often your only option when it comes to interfacing with the Apple Watch. (Incidentally, while the…

Tencent introduces TOS+, its open OS for smart hardware

Screen Shot 2015-04-28 at 12.39.03
Chinese internet giant Tencent announced today the launch of its own operating system, cunningly named Tencent Operating System (TOS+). The new OS is free and open to developers and manufacturers who agree to share their revenue. This is similar to what Google does with its Android OS. TOS+ offers voice recognition and mobile payment systems which will operate on smart hardware devices as well as TVs and connected homeware. This puts the OS in direct competition with the likes of smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi and Asia’s biggest internet company Alibaba which recently announced its Yun OS. Tencent’s mobile messaging app WeChat is…

WordPress now lets you use emoji… even in the URL of your post

Screen Shot 2015-04-28 at 11.31.52 am
Emoji support while blogging is something I’ve been waiting for as long as I can remember and it’s finally here. WordPress 4.2 landed last week and fully supports emoji. If you previously used emoji in a post, like 🍆, WordPress would fail to save the post and in some cases even lose the text you’d written. With this latest update, you can use emoji essentially anywhere (including in your URL slug, if you dare to try it 🚀). One word of warning: adding emoji to titles sometimes has unexpected results if your readers aren’t on the latest version of their browser, even though WordPress officially…

I’d love some disappointments like Apple’s iPad sales figures

iPadTea
Apple only sold 12.6 million iPads in the last quarter. Tim Cook should place himself in stocks at the centre of Apple’s new spaceship HQ and allow analysts to pelt him with rotten tomatoes. Steve Jobs’ ghost should appear to him on iPadmas Eve and haunt him for his failings. Or…we could just all get a grip and drop the narrative fed to us by hyped up analysts, traders and hacks after an easy line. The iPad isn’t dying and Apple hasn’t ‘disappointed’. Our smartphones get hammered by regular usage. They suffer more wear-and-tear, they feel older and slower far more quickly than…
