Bacon to be replaced with broccoli?
To IronPigs baseball fans, bacon is almost as big of an attraction as the sport itself.
"The bacon belongs here," Rich Prosser of Bethlehem said.
It comes on a stick, on a hotdog, doused in sugar and sprinkled inside of just about any sandwich you can imagine.
"I love bacon who doesn't like bacon?" Joseph Iannetta of Allentown said.
But a billboard off of Tilghman Street, near Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, suggests a serving of bacon a day increases the risk of cancer by over 20 percent.
A nonprofit group of physicians called the Physicians Committee is behind the message, encouraging the IronPigs team to ditch bacon for healthier snacks like broccoli.
"Broccoli are you serious?" Pat Kitchenman of North Wales said.
And the IronPigs President and General Manager Kurt Landes seems to agree.
"It is all about bacon this year," Landes said.
While Landes does say the park features salads, grilled chicken, fruit cups and gluten free options, he also says bacon will likely always be on the grill.
"It is amazing actually the nutritional benefits of bacon," Landes said. "We think bacon is a very healthy choice."
So if you find yourself settling in for the first inning and looking for a healthy snack, know that there are other options available. But bacon at Coca Cola Park will likely always be on the menu.
