Does anyone here remember how Federer, Nadal and Djokovic were treated by media and public before they became successful?

I'm too young to remember this, but what I mean is right now we can witness people seeing Coric and Kyrgios as big talents and potential future champions, some others such as Raonic, Nishikori and Cilic as guys who are probably able to occasionally surprise the top 3 and take a title or two, so does anyone remember what was said about the big 3 (Fed in the era of Sampras and Agassi, Nadal in the era of Fed, Djok in the era of Fed and Nadal) before they won their first big titles (I don't mean necessarily Grand Slams here)? Were they seen as talented, with bright future, or did they just come out of nowhere and started winning majors?
