A huge fire at the Squamish docks sent huge plumes of thick smoke over the district on Thursday night.
The blaze appears to have started near the Star Atlantic ship, carrying timber, Mayor Patricia Heintzman told CTV News.
“There was a significant amount of billowing and dark-looking smoke coming off the ship at the terminal," she said in a CKNW interview.
“It’s pretty smelly, pretty toxic smelling. There was a number of people down there and the RCMP has asked us to move away because not knowing the air quality issues which might arise from this.”
She urged people to stay inside to avoid the smoke, reported Global News.
Vancouver Fire Rescue tweeted that its fire boat was on its way to Squamish, which is about 60 kilometres north of Vancouver.
