Bill O'Brien names Brian Hoyer Texans' starting QB - again

A day after watching quarterback Brian Hoyer lead his team to a 31-20 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans coach Bill O'Brien announced he'll stick with the 30-year-old as the Texans' starter.

It's the second time in two months O'Brien has given Hoyer the starting job.

Hoyer won the job in training camp over Ryan Mallett, but when he struggled in the regular-season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, O'Brien pulled him for Mallett and Mallett started the next four games, though Hoyer finished the games against the Atlanta Falcons and Indianapolis Colts. He came on against the Colts after Mallett pulled himself from play in the first half after taking a shot to the ribs.

The Texans were down 13-0 midway through the second quarter, but Hoyer brought his team back. They were down 27-20 in the fourth quarter and driving before Hoyer threw a loss-sealing interception.

On Sunday against the Jaguars, however, Hoyer made no such mistakes. He completed 24 of his 36 passes for 293 yards and three touchdowns, with no picks, and Houston picked up its second win of the season.

Monday, O'Brien said, "I would say he's our quarterback. We're going to stick with him. He's playing really well. He's playing at a high level, and we've got a lot of confidence in him."

O'Brien also mentioned Hoyer's professionalism and how he's handled the coaching decisions this season, saying he doesn't regret pulling him for Mallett last month.

But Mallett has drawn criticism for being visibly annoyed when Hoyer remained in the Colts game.

In other Texans' news, "Hard Knocks" fan favorite Charles James, the cornerback who was among the team's final cuts, is back with the team. James signed with the Baltimore Ravens after his release and spent most of the season on the practice squad there before being promoted to the 53-man roster and then released in a matter of days last week.

Houston claimed James off waivers.
