Licia Prehn is a Detroit Red Wings fan who lives in Finland. She was born with congenital cataracts, and when she was pregnant with her daughter she developed a second cataract. Out of one eye she just sees gray, and nothing else. Out of the other eye, she has vision but is extremely nearsighted.
So watching hockey has its challenges.
But as Prehn shows in her latest video, it’s something hundreds of thousands of hockey fans around the world work through in order to experience the game they love.
When we first watched this clip, we were concerned it would amount to “just press your face against the monitor.” But it ends up being a very interesting video – like when she can and can’t see the puck, for example.

It also got us thinking about play-by-play announcers, too. Like, for example: How much grief does our beloved Doc Emrick get for his radio-level verbiage during a game?
For someone like Prehn, that descriptive style is precisely what she needs to follow the action.
